Esa Mäkijärvi: Ten poems
1. The change
Do you see how the forest
distancing
turns simpler
like you could comprehend it with one glance
take its demanding look.
2. Distances
Distances between grass blades are small
they whisper
that later this year many will die
they listen
with the same carelessness which is in us.
3. The beginning
Whole morning there has been sounds
of falling leaves
of birds leaving
the building shakes
from the storm around the city
the change has begun.
4. My place
The forest will stand here for a thousand years
but I will not
but I will only stand here for a little while
and give my place to others
and give my place to the trees.
5. Her face was made out of light
A woman turned and her face was made out of light
it blinded me
she blinded me
I turned away
but it was too late.
6. My shadow
My shadow is longer every day
even though my body
shrinks
even though my words
lose their meaning
my shadow is longer every day.
7. Footprints
When your footprints start to grow grass
it is time to turn
to come back.
8. To silence
The waves read the notebooks
one note
one line at a time
and the water destroys the paper and the notes
turn unclear
and clear
all the notes turn the same, to silence.
9. Only in music
Only in music, by listening,
we can for a moment look at God
and say that His eyes are empty,
to look into the mirror
and say that in Our eyes there is more.
10. Bridges
We build bridges across things
and far in the dephts the blue current seems black
and you cannot see the house
or the people
and the valley is like music in its green and light.
